Grissom High School Band Audition Requirements

General Audition Information Sheet

Incoming Freshmen Audition Information

1. Major Scales/Rudiments: 12 major scales including arpeggios as many octaves as you can play in eighth notes at MM quarter note = 120. Scale sheets are available here. Download the Adobe PDF Scale Sheet and print out the page for your instrument. Percussionists will play the rudiments listed below and your 12 major scales on Mallets.
2. Chromatic Scale: See below for octave requirement.
3. Etudes: Play 2 etudes for your instrument; one slow and one fast. Percussionists will play 3 short etudes one each for Snare, Mallets, and Timpani. All the required Etudes are available here as Adobe PDF files along with an MP3 file for you to hear the etudes as they are supposed to be performed to help you prepare. Please download these files and have fun practicing!
4. Sight-reading: Everyone will sight-read a short piece. Percussionists will sight read for your chosen major instrument: Snare, Mallets or Timpani.

The Grissom Band Directors will come to your band class in May to hear your audition. This is a requirement for your final exam grade at your school so if you are moving or going to another school next year you still have to play this audition. Those students not playing will not receive a passing grade for their exam.
