Grissom High School Jazz BandAudition InformationThe Grissom Jazz Bands are recognized throughout the United States and abroad. They have performed and competed in National and International Jazz Festivals including the North Sea International Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland, and The "Essentially Ellington" Festival/Competition in New York City. Both jazz bands traveled to Austria in 1996 performing for Austria's Millennium Celebrations. They perform for many statewide and community functions and also sponsor a jazz festival at the school when there are enough applicants for that year. Auditions for one of the jazz bands is open to all saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section players (piano, bass, guitar, and drums). All upperclassmen must prepare an audition CD/cassette and turn in by the last couple of weeks of school. Open enrollment for all upcoming 9th grade wind instrument players (saxophone, trumpet and trombone) that have an interest in jazz. All upcoming 9th grade rhythm section players (piano, bass, guitar, and drums) must prepare an audition CD/cassette and turn it in to Mr. Vernon by the last day of the school year. The audition material for upcoming 9th grade rhythm section players is posted here on the website. Audition material for all upperclassmen will be taken from the current school year's Alabama All-State Jazz Band requirements which can be found by going here.

The Grissom High School Jazz Band was selected to represent the State of Alabama in Washington D.C. by performing at The Kennedy Center on June 26, 2000. Congressman Bud Cramer nominated the band in October and Grissom was accepted in January. The band performed a concert on The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage for the Millennium Stage State Days series. The concerts, which feature a variety of artists from all 50 states, are part of the Center’s Performing Arts for Everyone initiative, that offers free daily concerts at 6:00 p.m. EST on the Millennium Stage in the Grand Foyer.
